Heritage Week in Fort Langley
Heritage Week (Feb 17 – 25), 2007

Tour Guides: Gaylene, Sara, Marv and Kay
Each year, the Heritage Society of British Columbia sets a
theme to celebrate Heritage Week. This year’s theme was
“Architecture in the Vernacular”. The
Langley
Centennial Museum planned to celebrate Heritage Week with
many events, the largest being the “Architecture without
Architects” tour, which included St. Andrew’s United Church and
nine other heritage buildings throughout Langley and Fort
Langley.
Marvin Woolley, dressed as an 1880’s Hudson Bay voyageur,
Gaylene Thoeny and daughter Sara as pioneers, and Kay McComish,
representing a 1920’s Langley housewife, greeted the public as
they checked out St. Andrew’s on this self-guided tour.
It was a very cold, wet Saturday February 24, with some snow
sticking to the ground first thing in the morning, so attendance
was poor, but those who did make it in had a first class lesson
about St. Andrew’s, its history and architecture, from our
Master Tour Guide, and everyone left having learned a little
something, including Michael Thoeny who had a personally guided
tour of the loft above the sanctuary.
Many thanks to those who made it out on such a miserable day.

roof structure. We are standing in the belfry.

This is the original sanctuary ceiling (about 2 feet higher than
the current ceiling). The original ceiling was shiplap, plaster
and ceiling paper.

More detail on the trusses.
