United Church Women (UCW)
The
Purpose of the UCW is to unite women of the congregation for
the total mission of the church and to provide a medium
through which they may express their loyalty and devotion to
Jesus Christ in Christian witness, study, fellowship and
service.
Membership is open to any woman who is in
sympathy with the Purpose and who is willing to contribute
her prayers, gifts, and services for the work of the church
in the world.
The NAOMI CIRCLE of the UCW is the “senior”
group of women at St. Andrew’s and currently has five
members. For many years the Naomi Circle was a large, vital
group of women—meeting monthly for devotion, business, and
fellowship. The group participated in, and initiated, many
fundraising projects.
At this time the “Naomis” have stepped back
from active participation in most church functions. They
meet four times a year for devotions, discussions, and
social times over the tea table in each other’s homes. They
provide an annual scholarship to a school in Angola, Africa,
carrying on a project dear to the heart of Evelyn Taylor, a
long-time member, now deceased. They also collect postage
stamps, which are passed on to the Cancer Society, who use
them in a fund raiser.
One of the members says, “The Naomi Circle
is very important to its members. Although we have few
organized meetings, we keep in touch by phone and support
each other through times of joy and sorrow.”
New members are welcome—come and get
acquainted with other women in the congregation of your age
and interests. Contact Marge Magaw at 604 888 1380.
The FRIENDSHIP CIRCLE of the UCW dates back
to 1965 when six or eight young mothers formed a group with
the sole purpose of “having a night out.” During the ensuing
years they “raised each other’s children” and developed into
a full-fledged UCW group. The women meet monthly for short
devotional times, discussions, and planning projects. They
also participate in the twice-yearly meetings of Fraser
Presbyterial. Women from all the UCW groups from Surrey to
Hope meet for a full day of programs, speakers, devotion,
fellowship, and lunch.
Over the years there have been fashion
shows, a fabulous lobster dinner, and always TEAS—funeral
teas, wedding teas, cranberry teas, Christmas teas, and
heritage teas! Once a year , in September, a work party
produces dozens of jars of antipasto to be sold at
fundraisers.
Meeting socially once a month and working on
projects does more than provide services to the church and
raise money—it is over the sink and making tea that
friendship and fellowship blooms. This is the true purpose
of the Circle.
The group is open to all women of the
congregation. Come join us. Contact the current president,
Joan Ward, at 604-594-6030.
